I woke up in the middle of last night after perpetually dreaming for what felt like hours about the card game Solitaire. I don't particularly like this game, but I play it often out of boredom. It's a great way to kill time and there are infinite outcomes possible. The dream however, made me realize something... Life is a little like playing Solitaire. You usually gotta go it alone. Someone can help you, but you'll get much further if only one person does the clicking. The cards are never a sure thing. While it seems there are infinite games that can be played with the same 52 cards, in reality, there is "nothing new under the sun". Life is a mix of a set number of options. The way you play the cards is ultimately reflected in the end outcome. There is no perfect way to play the game. Every theory, in its own right, has its faults. Each approach is not proven, and none are free of flaws. There are good games, there are bad games. There are games where you don't get very far, and games where you almost win. There are, in fact, some games you truly win. Winning the game is often within reach if you approach it in a slightly unconventional manner. Sometimes you have to remove cards from the stacks and put them back into play, even though at the time they were safely in their home. When you learn to sort out what is within reach, you are often rewarded. Sometimes, though, taking risks, removing cards from the safe spots and putting them back into play doesn't always reap rewards. You can lose money, and ultimately go in reverse. At the end of the day, the game generally reflects your best effort. The better you get at playing it, the more often you come out even. Learning to calculate the risk of actions teaches the player to bide their efforts. The game is not a free for all. You have to think. You have to make choices. You have to recognize that you won't always win and that life isn't always fair (4 aces at the bottom of the heaviest stack!? what!?). The point is that if you're going to play the game, you've got to do the best with what you've got, otherwise in the end you'll always come up short. |
